WHAT’s NEW AT Tōtara Point

Why We Choose the Cambridge Curriculum: Excellence Meets Purpose

In Auckland’s fast-paced world, where family life meets ambition, parents are seeking an education that nurtures both excellence and character. At Tōtara Point School, opening in January 2026 as a Catholic charter school, we’ve chosen the Cambridge Primary Curriculum because it offers the best of both worlds — academic brilliance grounded in enduring values.

Recognised in over 160 countries and trusted by 10,000+ schools worldwide, the Cambridge framework sets a world-class standard for learners aged 5–11. Yet in New Zealand, it remains uncommon — especially at the primary level, where no state-funded schools currently offer it. That’s why we’re proud to be among the first to bring Cambridge to Auckland families through the charter model, offering something truly distinctive: structure, global recognition, and joyful learning infused with faith.

In this post, we’ll share why we’ve chosen Cambridge, how its evidence-based design supports deep learning, and why it aligns so well with our mission to provide a faith-filled education that forms both minds and hearts.

Learning That’s Rigorous, Recognised, and Rooted in Values

When we set out to build Tōtara Point School, we wanted a curriculum that would prepare children not just for the next test, but for life. The Cambridge Primary Curriculum stood out for its clear progression across six stages covering core subjects such as English Mathematics and Science as well as Global Perspectives, Physical Education, Art and Languages.

Its carefully sequenced learning objectives ensure that each stage builds naturally on the one before it, whether that is moving from phonics to fluency in English or from simple sums to complex problem-solving in Mathematics. Alongside this, Cambridge provides tools like Progression Tests and the globally recognised Checkpoint exam, giving parents and teachers a clear sense of how each child is growing.

Globally, millions of children thrive under this system, but here in New Zealand it is a rare privilege. Fewer than 60 schools offer Cambridge programmes at any level, and only a small handful provide the Primary phase. That means Tōtara Point families will enjoy an education model that has a proven track record.

Learning That Matches How the Brain Works

We were also convinced by how closely Cambridge aligns with the latest research in the science of learning. Its approach emphasises “curriculum coherence,” making sure that teaching, assessment, and resources work together with how children actually absorb and retain knowledge.

This includes proven methods such as spaced repetition (revisiting ideas at carefully timed intervals) and active recall (drawing on memory rather than passively re-reading notes). These techniques help children remember more, for longer, while staying curious.

Independent reviews have highlighted how Cambridge’s focus on hands-on discovery builds both confidence and resilience. Far from being dry or exam-heavy, it encourages children to play, experiment, and explore, exactly what neuroscience tells us sparks long-term learning in the primary years.

Rigour Meets Creativity and Culture

Some parents worry that academic rigour might stifle imagination, but Cambridge balances the two beautifully. Mathematics and Science are taught with intensity, yes, but always through practical inquiry, such as testing ecosystems, building simple machines, or investigating local habitats.

Even the youngest students learn to research, think critically, debate, and form opinions.

We are a school with a Catholic ethos, every subject is taught with an eye to values, purpose, and seeing work itself as meaningful.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Picture a Stage 3 student at Tōtara Point:

  • In Science, they study native bird habitats in our eco-garden.
  • In Mathematics, they graph the results.
  • In Global Perspectives, they debate conservation solutions with classmates.
  • PE links teamwork on the field to resilience in life.

Every subject connects, making learning real, exciting, and memorable. This is the Cambridge promise, learning that builds both intellect and character.

Opening Global Doors

Cambridge is more than a curriculum; it is a passport. At the end of Year 6, children can sit the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint exam, taken by over 130,000 students annually worldwide. This provides internationally recognised certification and smooth entry into Cambridge Lower Secondary, IGCSE, or even pathways into NCEA.

Universities and employers across the globe respect Cambridge, and research shows that students who follow its programmes are more likely to succeed at top tertiary institutions. For our families, it means doors open, not just in New Zealand, but anywhere in the world.

Faith and Formation at the Core

Most importantly, the Cambridge Primary Curriculum complements our Catholic ethos. Its holistic strands, well-being in PSHE, justice in Global Perspectives, and creativity in the arts, align with our mission to form the whole child. At Tōtara Point, learning is not just about knowledge but about growth in wisdom, virtue, and purpose.

As one parent put it after hearing our plans: “It is rigour with heart.”
